Conceived by John Kander (music) and Fred Ebb (lyrics), one of Broadway's most prolific duos, the musical Cabaret was created in Boston in 1966. Their other successes include the musical Chicago, which was also performed in New York.
Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome... Between the 1920s and 1930s, Berlin's nightlife was in full swing. Cabaret takes us backstage at the Kit Kat Klub and tells two intertwined love stories set against the backdrop of the rise of Nazism in Germany. One story is between American writer Clifford Bradshaw and British cabaret artist Sally Bowles. The other story is between Bradshaw's landlady, Fräulein Schneider, and Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit seller.
The show is built like a cabaret and supervised by the Kit Kat Klub's master of ceremonies, as if we were attending a musical revue.
The musical Cabaret is based on the 1951 play I Am a Camera by John Van Druten, which is based on Christopher Isherwood's 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin. Cabaret is one of the greatest American musical classics.
The current Broadway production is the show's fourth New York revival. These revivals have won numerous Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score, for a total of 13 awards to date.
This all-new production features an electrifyingly intimate staging with a distinct aesthetic. The stage at New York's August Wilson Theatre has been redesigned to transform the theater into a cabaret venue with bi-frontal seating and round tables.
