What's The Queen of Versailles about?
The Queen of Versailles is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (known for Wicked, The Prince of Egypt and The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and a libretto by Lindsey Ferrentino. The show is an adaptation of the 2012 documentary of the same name.
Shortly before the 2008 financial crisis, Jackie and David Siegel began construction in Florida on an enormous house inspired by the Palace of Versailles. Jackie is a former Miss Florida model. Her husband, David, who is 30 years her senior, founded and owns Westgate Resorts, a timeshare vacation home company.
When the recession hits, construction of the house halts and all the staff are laid off. Jackie must learn to control her shopping addiction while David focuses on saving his real estate empire. Ultimately, the family avoided bankruptcy. But fate strikes again when their daughter Victoria dies.
