What's Ragtime about?
Ragtime is a musical based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow. The story takes place in the early 20th century, a period of profound social change in the United States marked by industrialization, mass immigration, and racial tensions.
The show follows three groups of characters whose destinies intersect: a wealthy white family living in New Rochelle, African Americans in Harlem led by Coalhouse Walker Jr. (a brilliant ragtime pianist), and immigrants from Europe seeking a better life for their children, whose journey illustrates the hope and difficulties of the American Dream.

Ragtime, is an epic fresco written by Stephen Flaherty (music), Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) and Terrence McNally (libretto), who was created in Toronto in 1996. The trio are also behind the musical Anastasia. The show has already been performed twice in New York and has also been produced three times in London, once in Australia and once in Norway.
This Broadway musical alternates between intimate moments and grand epic scenes. Its rich, spectacular music reflects the energy and tensions of this "America in the making". This earned it four Tony Awards in 1998, including Best Book and Best Music.
